Fireless Cookers were made at the turn of the 20th century. Their rise in popularity coincided with the rise of the servant-less middle classes. A housewife could do it all: Cook hot meals, care for children and livestock and run the home without the need to constantly tend a stove or worry about fuel supplies.

In 1909, Margaret J. Mitchell, a champion of women’s suffrage and a social reformer, published the hugely popular “Fireless Cook Book: A Manual of the Construction and Use of Appliances for Cooking with Retained Heat.” The Toledo Cooker Co., to help increase sales of its cooker, published a cookbook in 1919 after scarcities of World War I renewed interest once again in the efficiency of fireless cooking.
