Farmer Giles of Ham is a comic medieval fantasy about an ordinary, rather self-important farmer who becomes an accidental hero. A wandering giant damages Giles’s farm, and Giles drives him away with an old blunderbuss. The villagers turn the event into a heroic legend, and the king rewards him with an ancient sword. Later, when the dragon Chrysophylax Dives begins terrorizing the countryside, Giles is expected to confront him. Giles is not a traditional noble knight. He survives largely through practicality, luck, stubbornness, and clever bargaining. He eventually outwits both the dragon and the greedy king, gaining wealth and establishing himself as ruler of his own territory.
