The story follows a court jester who awakens to discover that laughter has disappeared from his kingdom. Accompanied by his jester-on-a-stick, Pharley, he sets off on a quest to recover the world’s lost sense of humor. Told in rhyme and filled with vibrant medieval-inspired artwork, the book offers an uplifting message about courage, laughter, hope, and finding joy during difficult times.
David Saltzman created the story while undergoing treatment for cancer as a young man. It was published posthumously by his family in 1995 and later inspired the nonprofit Jester & Pharley Phund, which brings books and encouragement to children facing serious illness.
The book includes a thoughtful afterword by Maurice Sendak, author and illustrator of Where the Wild Things Are, remembering Saltzman’s talent, humor, and spirit.
