Beginning with the celebrated Japanese poet Kobayashi Issa, Blyth traces the development of haiku through the Meiji and Shōwa eras and into the modern period. The volume discusses major poets and movements, including Shiki, Santōka and numerous twentieth-century writers. More than a collection of poems, the book combines literary history, criticism and anthology. Haiku appear in their original Japanese, with romanized text, English translations and Blyth’s detailed commentary. The volume also contains numerous black-and-white and color illustrations inspired by traditional Japanese art. He also explains concepts such as sabi, the beauty associated with age, solitude and the passage of time.
